Breakfast show presenter Derek Scott on the Galapagos Islands (note the Iguana to his right)
Breakfast show presenter Derek Scott has recently returned from holiday. He packed his Meridian Radio shirt & cap and had a photograph taken on one of the islands he visited.
He has issued a challenge to fellow presenters to top that by being photographed in a Meridian Radio shirt or cap somewhere in the world. He may have set the bar high as his pic was taken on the Galapagos Islands (note the Iguana to his right).
Let’s see if someone can rise to the challenge. Listeners are also invited to join in – Meridian Radio T shirts are available from the website shop. Send us your pics and we'll put them up on our website!

Robert recently caught up with actor John Challis, best known for playing Boycie in Only Fools and Horses, at the Ideal Home Exhibition at Earls Court, where a recreation of the Trotter's flat had been set up! Boycie said he was lucky that he didn't visit the real flat very often and that it wasn't to his or Marlene's taste!
Unfortunately Robert was soon called away to help Del with a priceless chandelier, at least it was priceless until they got their hands on it!
Listen to Robert and Boycie here!

Country music sensation LeAnn Rimes recently talked to Tina Campbell about performing at the London 02 and what advice she would give to her younger self.
With record sales of more than 37 million, two Grammy Awards and hits including How Do I Live and Can't Fight The Moonlight, LeAnn Rimes is already a veteran in the world of country music aged only 30.
LeAnn explained, “Country music has really opened up into more of a mainstream genre than it ever has been. I know in the UK it has been more like, older school country music, so it's exciting to see it crossing over and that people are really embracing it.”
She performed at the London O2 in Greenwich when the venue staged its first ever UK country music festival, C2C: Country To Country, in March. She gave one of her only interviews to Meridian Radio CraveOn Music Presenter Tina.

Singer and X Factor Winner 2005, Shayne Ward, performed at the launch of Release The Peace in London. Whilst on stage he also revealed plans to return to the recording studio and start work on a fourth album.
Supported by The Mayor Of London, Boris Johnson, who also attended the event at London's 02 Indigo on 28th October, Release The Peace aims to influence youths to encourage peace within their communities.
Over the next 4 years, founders Grace Idowu and Margaret Mizen, will travel the UK and share the stories of their 2 sons David Idowu and Jimmy Mizen, who both lost their lives as a result of street violence.
Going into schools, prisons, and rehabilitation centres, they want to encourage youths to organise peaceful events and activities in their communities. For those who do, Release The Peace will reward them with tickets to sporting and music events such as the launch.
In a line-up that also included Dru Blu, Sam Grey, and Hollyoaks actress Abi Phillips: it was actually the first time in a year and a half that Shayne Ward had performed his own songs on stage.
This was due to recently completing a year-long run in West End musical, Rock Of Ages. So with this in mind, was he nervous about performing, or possibly forgetting his song lyrics? Speaking backstage he confided:
“There's always a cheat if you ever forget a word. You just put the mic out to the audience, but then you run the risk of people not knowing them!”
Thankfully that wasn't the case. Some of the 28-year-old singer's dedicated fans had travelled from afar to be at the launch and sang-a-long to his hits which included 'No U Hang Up' and 'If That's Ok With You'.
Deciding to get involved with Release The Peace after his management sent him details, Ward praised the work of Grace Idowu and Margaret Mizen.
“I take my hat off to Grace and Margaret for the way that they have been able to put the anger aside and do something so positive: they're doing an amazing job”.
Ward grew up in a part of Manchester notorious for guns and violence: “I think you get rough parts everywhere you go - at one point in the early years it was called Gun-chester!”
The youngest son of 7 children, he credits his family as having helped prevent him from falling prey to any bad influences:
“I'm quite lucky, I'm from a big Irish family so was always protected: I was never really around the rough people.”
“I've never been a person to hang about the street and never wanted to be part of a gang. My gang was in people's houses having cups of tea - the tea gang!”
His performance at Release The Peace has re-affirmed his desire to create new music. “It was great to sing my songs again, but it's time that I needed a new song now.”
“The hunger has always been there, it's just finding the right time to go back in. I want to get back to where I belong.”
Ward has sold over 3 million records worldwide. Following the end of his record deal with SyCo Music in 2011, he took time out from his recording career to appear in Rock Of Ages.
His stage turn as bad boy rocker, Stacee Jaxx, proved popular with audiences and earned him a 2012 What's On Stage Award nomination for Best Newcomer.
Having won the biggest TV talent show in the UK, we know that Ward can sing and after embracing dancing and acting in the West End, he's not one to shy away from other challenges - he recently made his DJ debut at a club in Ireland!
“It was cool! I joined an agency, they asked if I wanted to do some DJ spots and I thought, why not!” “I'm not a DJ, I don't know how to mix it, so I sat with them and learnt how. I chose [the tracks], then went along with a professional DJ”.
Another new experience which awaits him is marriage: he has just gotten engaged to his sweetheart of 9 years, Faye Mckeever.
The actress who currently stars in Sky TV series 'Trollied', is sat nearby. Mckeever has been a rock of support for him over the years and with her acting career going from strength-to-strength, he is clearly very proud of her.
Reacting to London Mayor Boris Johnson's announcement that following an earlier initiative by Mizen and Idowu, London has seen a 6% decrease in street-related crime, Ward said:
"I'm sick of turning on the TV and seeing that someone else has passed away through violence on the street. Every time you turn on the news there's always disaster: it's upsetting".
He continued, “If we can decrease that even more from 6% to 20, 30, 40[%], it would be amazing."
Ward urges people to get involved with Release The Peace by visiting the official website, releasethepeace.com, and has pledged to continue his own support.

It’s been a very special time for the Royal Borough of Greenwich recently with the restored Cutty Sark being reopened by HRH, the Queen. Several days before at the weekend Greenwich residents were able to have a preview of the ship. Presenters Derek Scott & Vivienne Lee came across each other aboard but forgot to have a photo taken together. The restoration is very impressive and is well worth a visit.
On the day of the official opening Vivienne was back, this time with presenter Duncan Martin, as part of the media presence. Unlike at the weekend, the weather was back to its awful worst although it did stop raining for a while when Her Majesty arrived.

Rattling the tins for Meridian Radio
Meridian Radio has been out and about raising funds to help finance our broadcasts. On Saturday 10 December in the afternoon we were at Sainsburys on the Greenwich peninsula. On a sunny day, made all the better by the fact that we were in the exit covered way, we raised just under £50. Our thanks to those who gave and to Sainsburys for allowing us to make the collection.

Out and about on the fundraising trail
Having undertaken a couple of fund raising events in the Hospital foyer in our 50th anniversary year we decided it was time to take our efforts out into the community. On Sunday 27th November Meridian Radio was at the Woodlands farm Christmas Fair. The weather was kind (if a little windy) and we made a reasonable amount for our funds. We hope to be at further events at the farm and will be publicising details on our website next year. Thanks to everyone at the farm for making us so welcome.

Part One of our 50th Anniversary Celebrations took place over the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend. Part Two was a more scarey affair – billed as a “creepy weekend”.
In the days leading up to Halloween we manned a stall outside the Restaurant and raised some much needed cash to finance our broadcasts to the hospital by selling various items including cuddly toys, CDs, DVDs and books. We also produced extra programmes with plenty of ghoulish music on the Saturday & Sunday.

Designed by local web designer Adam MacHardie at Rapid Web Designer, the new site provides the latest local news and weather, an extensive What’s On diary of events in the area and a shop where you can purchase Meridian Radio branded goodies!
As well as all that, there is information on our schedule and our presenters, plus plenty of ways for our audience to get in touch including links to our Facebook page and Twitter feed.
We have also introduced a new email address: studio@meridianradio.co.uk
We hope you like the new look website!

Our May day Weekend programmes were just part of our anniversary year celebrations.
Most of our Presenters took part in the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend broadcast to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. Here are some of the pictures taken that weekend.

Not quite. Johnnie was at the British Music Experience at the Dome to give an entertaining account of his radio career. Presenters Derek Scott & Alan King were there. After the talk many fans wanted Johnnie to sign his autobiography ("The Autobiography" - out now in paperback) but he made time to record a station ident for us. Expect to hear it on air from Sunday.

Most of the time our presenters only see each other in twos or threes but every now and then we have a get together.
The most recent occasion allowed us to celebrate the long service of 7 of our presenters who, have given a combined total of 210 years service. On hand to present the certificates was June Snowden, President of the Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA).
With the serious stuff out of the way they then turned their attention to marking Friday's Red Nose Day.
